If you're only 12 hours in, you should be able to restart it and only take 4 hours if you skip the cut scenes :-). The battles get better, more enemies, better skills and new party members but the story does some dumb crap. If you like the game now it will only get better. I just made it onto the 2nd disc and my box decided to red ring - sadness. Leah, give in to your Star Ocean love!!
