Confessions of a Backlogged Gamer, Weeks 22-23: Unfamiliar Territory

Okay, so I guess I should start off by confessing (as this is, after all, a “confessions” column) that I haven’t finished a game in these past two weeks.  I haven’t bought any either, though, so I don’t feel TOO bad about it.  I did borrow a game, though, and that’s really what I’ve put most of my time into; yeah, that’s right, eight years ago called, and they want their game back.

Since I’ve been a bit of a bully about getting Elaine into playing JRPGs (although really, it’s for her own good), I thought it was probably time to put my proverbial money where my mouth is and take up the opposite side of the equation myself.  What does this mean?  It means I’m playing Halo.  This is super-weird.

It really is like I’m playing in a time-warp; I feel like I’m just now getting around to something that the rest of the world has known for a really long time (this is not an unfair assumption, really…).  As such, while I am actually enjoying the game, it’s more than just a game right now- it’s more like an anthropological experiment.  This was a major part of 2001’s culture, and I missed it, so now when I do things like tweet about how the Flood scared the fuck out of me the first time I encountered them, and how I did the utterly girly scream and sweep with my assault rifle at least every thirty seconds because every goddamn bit of the level looked the same and I kept getting startled, I get laughed at, because this is not exactly new and/or revolutionary.  It is, in fact, the video game equivalent of gushing about that Harry Potter kid…. did you know he can do MAGIC??  Yeah, I feel a little silly.  I’m enjoying the game, though, and I think I’m almost done, but I am very very bad at it, despite thoroughly chickening out and playing on easy, so the last bits may take me a while.

The other two games I’ve been going through are the same as last week; Crimson Gem Saga for the PSP and Persona 3’s FES content for the PS2.  I haven’t really been putting much concerted effort into either one, but rather just doing short stints of time whenever I’m feeling the urge.  Nothing much has really changed in either, although I’m beginning to suspect that I will need to put some grinding time into Crimson Gem Saga; the battles aren’t impossible or anything, at least not yet, but they are getting much more difficult to coast through.  It’s that stupid mage, I think.  GET MORE HIT POINTS, YOU LITTLE BASTARD.

I have also reactivated my World of Warcraft account.  I don’t think we’re going to talk about that, though.

Current backlog total: 99

Now playing: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES (PS2); Crimson Gem Saga (PSP); Halo (XBox)

New games added: none (I borrowed Halo, so it doesn’t count)

Games completed: none (yeah, yeah….)

You make me feel much better about replaying Marvel: Ultimate Alliance while I have GTA: Lost and Damned, Overlord, Saint’s Row, Viva Pinata 2, Disgaea 3, Little Big Planet, and Valkyria Chronicles that I haven’t started. Oh, and I have a game of Infamous started.

I should really just stop buying new things.

Oh, and Evan just made me buy BF 1943 today. God, I am terrible at this whole “save money” thing.

I have the same problem as well and Evan is probably going to convince me to get BF 1943 also. Stupid shiny things getting my attention and making me buy them.

I’ve got the same problem with Crimson Gem Saga. To make matters worse I stumbled across a secret warp at the start of one of that acts which teleported me to near the end of it. The monster fights were less then fun :(

It turns out I actually went the wrong way and got to a dungeon I wasn’t supposed to be in yet, so I’m not quite as bad off as I thought… a bit better, even, because I got myself some extra XP fighting the higher-level stuff there. Still may have to do some grinding, though. We’ll see.

Any chance it was after you were arrested, walked out of the city and investigated a well?
