About Us
Some Other Castle is the brainchild of Elaine Stryker and Leah Haydu, two hopelessly nerdy (and hopelessly awesome) ladies who like video games, movies, comics, and hearing themselves talk. Put that all together, and what do you get? Well, you get something like this site. Some Other Castle was started in January of 2009 when they decided to finally take the step of getting a domain name and some shiny podcasting equipment to broadcast their rantings for all the internets to see.
The name was pretty easy; after all, what more iconic female figure in video games is there than that darn princess, always getting shuffled off to another castle? Even if she is annoying, she’s instantly recognizeable, and the concept of creating their own castle to hide out in proved to be the perfect fit for the site’s theme. After testing numerous taglines (such as “Some Other Castle: Because SOMEONE Keeps Talking To Strangers” and the more direct “Some Other Castle: Because The Bitch Keeps Getting Caught”), they settled on “Some Other Castle: Where You Didn’t Know You Needed To Be.” Because you didn’t know, did you? But now you do. Aren’t you glad you’re here?
ELAINE STRYKER manages the NJ branch of Some Other Castle (i.e. her basement). Her “education” is in Electrical Engineering but her true passion in life is video games. Elaine has been playing games since the NES days and often reminisces about games like Super Metroid and Earthbound and talks fondly of her days in arcades playing Street Fighter II. When Elaine isn’t writing, editing a podcast or playing some new fighting game that has come across her desk she can be found drooling over the newest tech gadgets or looking for awesome new hats to match with her shoes.
LEAH HAYDU manages the Southeastern PA branch of Some Other Castle (i.e. her living room). Her background is in English literature, and she loves to write, so having a space to rant freely has long been a passion of hers. It doesn’t hurt that she also has a passion for video games and all associated avenues of nerddom. When she’s not playing or writing about ridiculously Japanese RPGs, Leah also enjoys reading, watching terrible horror movies, and harassing her two cats.
