Vicarious Gaming 101: Shifting Perceptions

This vicarious gaming installment is going to be a bit different.  For those of you keeping track Leah and I now have Rikku in our party and we have managed to traverse the Thunder Plains without Leah hurling a Dual Shock 3 into my flat panel.  I’m not quite as interested in discussing that this [...]

Vicarious Gaming 101: I think I get it now!

This week’s vicarious gaming session was especially awesome for me.  I watched Leah play for about 3 hours and I spent way less time confused and asking questions then ever before!  We played until right after the Djose Temple which means we have ourselves a shiny new Aeon to use in battle.  It can best [...]

Vicarious Gaming 101: Giant Chickens?!

Once again we return to the realm of Final Fantasy X for another episode of Vicarious Gaming 101.  This episode we saved the Chocobos!  I don’t really know how exciting that piece of information is but for me it warranted an exclamation point.  Seeing as how I have played very small bits of Final Fantasy games [...]

Confessions of a Backlogged Gamer, Week 4: I Don’t Even Like Star Ocean

I believe we’ve already discussed my brief tryst with Prinny, so I think we can consider that particular subject closed. However, I did start some actual enjoyable games this week, including one that I’m still a little iffy about, but about which I am trying to keep a cautiously optimisitic outlook.

Chocobos Must Die; or, Why I Hate Minigames

I am, off and on, a completionist with regards to my RPGs. I like to do everything, and I like to get everything. It’s part of why I have such a ridiculous backlog. I say “off and on,” however, because there are some things that I just won’t do. When it becomes a chore instead of being fun, then there’s no real point any more, at least not for me. That’s why I sometimes feel just a little bit betrayed by JRPGs in general and by my beloved Final Fantasy series in particular; in the more modern wave of these games (relatively modern, that is, say within the last ten years or so), it’s been the norm to include some stupid minigame as part of the storyline.

Vicarious Gaming 101: Blitzball’d

We return to the story of a girl who doesn’t played JRPGs and her adventure in watching her friend play through one.  This is what happens when people stop being nice and start getting real….annoyed by Tidus.  Due to my plague-like disease, I was too gross to make with the podcasting this week.  As a substitute [...]

Confessions of a Backlogged Gamer, Week 3: Withdrawal

After fifty and one-half hours, I have finally finished Tales of Vesperia. This isn’t the longest time I’ve ever spent on a game (my 94-hour Final Fantasy XII save and several of at least that length for VIII attest to that), and I’m quite sure I could have pushed this one further, as I didn’t complete even half of all the side missions, but still…. that’s over two full days in real-people time. That’s no joke.

Confessions of a Backlogged Gamer, Week 2: Slooooooow

Slow progress is better than no progress, right?  Of course right.  I haven’t actually finished any new games this week, but things have been shifted around a little.  Let’s see here.
